Campbell River reduces garbage to the landfill in 2011February 10, 2012The change in rules for garbage collection last year has had a positive effect on the environment and the City’s spending. The one can garbage curbside pickup limit has not surprisingly led to less waste dumped into the landfill. “From the residents in Campbell River, our garbage collected and disposed of has gone down by 23 percent in 2011 as compared to 2010,” says City Manager of Operations Ron Neufeld. “So it’s been a fairly dramatic drop in the amount of material that has been going into the landfill.” Meanwhile the amount of recycling collected has gone up by 28% and yard waste has doubled. Neufeld says the city has saved money on reduced tipping fees for 2011 were around $60,000 less than in they were in 2010. “If Campbell River can continue to reduce how much garbage we generate, that will help us try to hold our own against risingtipping fee costs,” Neufeld adds. “If the community continues the current trend of diverting recyclable material and yard waste away from the landfill, up to $80,000 in tipping fees could be saved in 2012.” |
