Emotional reunion with pet saved by donationsFebruary 16, 2012A very special family pet is returning home to Oyster River on Friday. Sadie was hit by a car on February 2, 2012, suffering a shattered pelvis, numerous fractures and damage to her internal organs. "This dog has a real relationship with one of the kids who has a rare disease called Angelman Syndrome," says family friend Tracey Robertson. "The dog and the girl would actually calm each other down. She has quite severe special needs and this dog and her have such a strong bond." The 14-month-old bull terrier, shepherd, husky cross had to be given up for adoption, because her family just couldn't afford the $5,000 medical bill. "When I saw this family, it looked like their hearts were ripped out," says Robertson. "When I looked at my dog I thought, you know, this could happen to me. I wouldn't have $5000 just sitting around to save her and if I had to give her away to get her the help she needed, I would die inside." She's pleading with the community to make a donation to Victoria Adoptables, which has taken the unprecedented step of paying for the surgery and returning Sadie to her family. "They're excited. They're really excited," says Carol Broad, who founded Victoria Adoptables and got in touch with Elk Lake Vet in Victoria, to perform the surgery. "It worked out so well and we're so pleased that everybody pulled together. Great little dog and there's a real bond between her and [the daughter.]" $2,100 worth of donations have already been handed to Victoria Adoptables, but they need to raise about $2,500 more.
