Airline pricing up to you

February 17, 2012

It's a common disappointment: Finding a flight at an incredible bargain price, only to realize that's before taxes, fees and extra charges.

The Canadian Transportation Agency says there's currently no rule about how airlines have to advertise their prices, but that's about to change.

"We are actively seeking the views of Canadians using an innovative online platform that allows people to post their own ideas, comment on the ideas posted, and indicate which ones they like best," says CTA Chair and CEO, Geoff Hare.

Online consultation will be held until February 26, to help the Agency draft the new regulations. The proposed regulations will then be published in Part I of the Canada Gazette, which will provide a further opportunity for input.

"The intent of the new regulations is to ensure greater transparency and allow consumers to easily determine the total price of an air service before they make their purchase decision," Hare explains.
