Residential school survivors share their storiesFebruary 18, 2012
It's making its way around the country and the next stop is Vancouver Island. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission is gathering testimony and stories from residential school survivors and their families in Canada and will be holding events in Port Hardy, Campbell River, Port Alberni and Duncan at the end of February and beginning of March. Click here to see the dates and times for each community hearing. The smaller forums are being held ahead of a regional TRC event in Victoria April 13-14. For over one hundred years, many aboriginal kids were forced to leave their families and communities to attend the church-run schools, where accounts of abuse, neglect and discrimination were common. The TRC gives survivors and their families a forum to tell their stories in a private or public setting. The accounts are documented for the Canadian archives. |
